Michael McFadyen's Scuba Diving - Barracuda Wall, Indonesia
In May 2024 I spent a bit over two weeks diving in Tulamben before moving south to Amed for another week's diving. Both these places are on the north-eastern coast of Bali. While at Tulamben you virtually only do shore dives, most of the dives at Amed are boat dives. Some of these were back up towards Tulamben and some were even to the wreck of the USAT Liberty (which we declined to go on).
The main Amed dive sites are very close to the town and its nearby villages, just off the shore in reality. I stayed at the Hotel Uyah and used their associated dive shop Amed Dive Center which is on the premises.
Barracuda Wall is a dive site that is about 3.8 kilometres east-south-east from the hotel. An approximate GPS mark for this dive is 8°20'39.246"S 115°40'30.439"E (using WGS84 as the datum).

We started off the eastern end of Bunutan Beach and once we descended, we drifted to the east and east-south-east around the point. We descended in 3 metres of water and went north into deeper water and then east. There were thousands of barrel sponges, some are huge.
We also saw hundreds of gorgonias, some were also large. There were a few pink ones but we could find no pygmy sea horses on them. I saw the biggest garden eels I have ever seen at the start of the dive, hundreds of them. There were also a few moray eels, two ribbon eels and lots of tropical fish.
At the end of the dive there were heaps of large brain corals, one was the the biggest I have seen I think. A nice dive, with some current pushing us along in the middle part of the dive. Visbility very good, say 20 metres. Water temperature was 28C.
Sorry, no underwater photos as camera problems.
